Random Values Assessment of the Week

Random Values Assessment of the Week

There are a lot of things I value - my friends, my family, my derby teammates, my work, good music and the few hours of sleep I manage to squeeze in between all of those things.

But when I tried to think of something to submit for the American Values Project, it took me a few minutes to settle one that rolled all of those things into one. If I wasn't in Memphis, my life would be fundamentally different (and dare I say, not as good).

Value!

The American Values Project is a study of what we as a people care about most. It's being run by Rhodes College philosophy professor Dr. Leigh Johnson. She and her team are trying to collect as many diverse submissions as they possibly can. If they have enough submissions, they'll consider holding a gallery exhibition later this spring.

I scrolled through their photo album and was surprised by some of the values. Tons of people value their families and love and friendships, but others value privacy, nudity, authenticity and humor.

If you'd like to contribute to the American Values Project, go here.

Kerry, this may be the most profound issue posted to date ~ and that's a feat in itself ~ not just in a degree of authentic, introspection, also in providing the fine Dr empirical data sets to complete research, regionally, ultimately enabling a national blue-print to emerge / highlighting pockets of influence. And she is doing so, just as a recent endeavor RE New Yorkers, in perfect fashion ~ as 'one of us' ~ in using non academic pedagogy. An experiment rife with subject heavy terminology :: solipsism, ontology, panpsychism, Mazdaism, teleology, etc would be dead on arrival. By utilizing contemporary verbiage she has the 'unexpected' thinking rather deeply on the basic fundamentals of 'Philosophy', almost, subliminally. On an elementary level, no more, no less than Plato's Musings: What do I know? What is it that I do not know? And after due diligence and a vigilant effort to discern where I fall on this continuum, what's steps are required to maximize my gifts to benefit the greater good!! The sublime cloaked in the illusory nature of simplicity. Its a beautiful thing. The personal, inter-active nature of what's entailed not only makes the project more enjoyable, it leaves the participant knowing they have completed a self edifying exercise. It's perfect for Memphians; I say such because just as so much else in town accomplishes ~ anything that superficially intends to, or possesses the potential to divide, counter-intuitively, eventuates shining the bight light of peace and understanding; that blinding light of place, illuminating our similarities. It's the bane of some social theorists, as to how 100s of thousands stay, in light of this or that list stating what a loathsome city Memphis surely is, girded by their lists of statistics. Their opinions are in no way found differing to me having my own opinions. And as is said, opinions are akin to elbows; my elbow is quite happy here; actually Memphis gets the whole ball of wax. There's no other place I'd rather be! Period! Tremendous thought experiment. Tremendous post. Tremendous blog. Tremendous city. lp
