Monday News Update: Uplifting Stories, Mayor Wharton goes to Washington and a Goodbye to a Memphis Legend

Alas, spring break (and my short vacation) is over. Here's some Memphis news to ease you into your workweek.

But first, here's a jackalope.

Jackalope, Memphis, Tenn.

- CNN's epic story about NBA player (and native Memphian) Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway coaching the Lester Middle School basketball team is one of the most uplifting, feel-good things you'll ever read about the city.

- I know you guys will never give up on Gibson's, but Brookhaven Circle is getting a Dunkin' Donuts at the beginning of April.

- Alas, Tiger basketball season has some to a somewhat depressing end. I've packed my gameday socks away until November, but you can relive the whole season on the Flyer's Tiger Blue blog.

- Mayor Wharton met with President Obama last week as part of the Strong Cities, Strong Communities initiative. The meeting was a pretty big deal, too. As the mayor said, "We weren’t meeting with the deputy undersecretary’s assistant to the hall closet.”

- I hate to end on a sad note, but we lost a legendary Memphian over the weekend. Sam Bomarito, owner of Pete & Sam's restaurant on Park, passed away on Saturday at age 89.

quote from the Dunkin donuts article “East Memphis is probably the hardest trade area for any retailer to penetrate due to lack of available properties and the higher expense of securing a site,” Massey said. “This is especially true to restaurants that need a drive through capability such as Dunkin’ Donuts.” did they really have to use the "p word"
