Hot Wings Bracket, Round 1: Molly’s La Casita vs. Alex’s Tavern

It's time for the third match up of the first round of the Best Hot Wings in Memphis bracket: Molly's la Casita vs. Alex's Tavern.

Here’s how the first round works: In the first round, I'm going to try half orders of wings at each restaurant. If I have honey hot wings at one wing joint, that's what I'll have at its opponent. So, in this round, I had the Mexican wings at Molly's and the Greek Wings at Alex's.

I’ll lay out my thoughts on each offering, and you guys will have 24 hours to vote in the poll at the bottom of the post. I’ll cast my vote, too, and the winner will move on to the next round. You can only vote once in each match up.

Let's meet the contenders:

Molly's la Casita

2006 Madison Ave
Memphis, Tennessee 38104
(901) 726-1873

Molly's La Casita on Urbanspoon

Order: half order of Mexican wings, $11.50 for 8.
Mexican Wings, Molly's La Casita, Memphis, Tenn.
I wouldn't normally think of ordering hot wings at a Mexican restaurant, but the menu at Molly's says that these are "the best wings you'll ever eat".
They were good, but I don't know if I would go so far as to call them the best I've ever had. They're dry rub wings, which means they have no sauce. They're seasoned with a mixture of spices (I definitely tasted cumin and chili powder) and are fried.
If you're a fan of a crunchier wing, these are fried to crispy perfection. I found myself using the side of bleu cheese to moisten them. They're also bigger than most drummies – they seem like stunted-growth chicken legs.
Napkin rating: one lonely napkin. These are possibly the least messy wings I've ever had.
And in the other corner:
1445 Jackson Avenue
Memphis, TN 38107

(901) 278-9086

Alex's Tavern on Urbanspoon

Order: Eight wings, half Greek, half hot, $10. For this round, I'll only comment on the Greek wings.
Greek wings, from Alex's, Memphis, Tenn.
While I found the Mexican wings to be a little dry, I'm all about what Greece has to offer. The seasoned Greek wings from Alex's Tavern are perfection. They're not super spicy, but they've got a ton of seasoning. Unlike the Molly's wings, they're not completely dry – they've got some sort of light sauce.
The wings are fried, but they're not overly crispy on the outside. I thought that a wing that big wouldn't be super tender, but I was wrong – these are super juicy.
On a side note, Alex's is one of those hole-in-the-wall bars that's open all day and after hours, so you can get wings just about anytime.
Now it's time to cast your vote. You can only vote once, and voting will be open until 3 p.m. on Feb. 22. The winner will face the winner of the Don Don's vs. Crumpy's match up.

This commentary is bias and brought to you by Alex's.  All voters should taste both wing recipes before casting their vote!

Alex's are the best in town. I dream of their wings.

suggestion – not sure if they fit in the hot wing category but you MUST try the chicken drummies at the BBQ Shop. So freaking good!

CHING's       are the best wings!!!  and the favorite to win  by  more than a touchdown!
