In honor of the two Memphis-themed musicals ("Memphis" and "Million Dollar Quartet") at the Orpheum this Broadway season, the theater is encouraging Memphians and visitors to dig a little deeper into Memphis' aural past.
They're giving out small, blue, real-looking passports that are meant to serve as the textbook for a crash course in Memphis' musical history.
Each of the eight stops in the book have something to do with Memphis' musical history: Graceland, the Stax Museum, Sun Studio, the National Civil Rights Museum, the Rock'n'Soul Museum, Backbeat Tours and B.B. King's on Beale.
When you visit one of the stops, have your passport stamped. While you don't have to take the tour to get a stamp, you should, especially since the passports are loaded with discount admission coupons. You can get buy-one, get-one-free admission to Stax, Sun Studio, the Civil Rights Museum, Rock'n'Soul Museum and Backbeat Tours and 50 percent off of platinum tours at Graceland. You can also score free cover and a half-price appetizer from B.B. King's.
The Orpheum is offering some sweet incentives for those intrepid souls that complete passport stops. If you finish all of the stops, you can bring your passport to the theatre for a free t-shirt. Once you've got one stamp, you can submit a photo of you holding your stamped passport (from any one of the stops) for a chance to win two tickets to Million Dollar Quartet's opening night and cast party on Feb. 14th.
The passports and coupons are good until February 29th, 2012. You can pick them up at the Orpheum, Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau, Visitor's Centers and any of the attractions listed in the passport.
