Interact With Stax
The Stax Museum of American Soul Music was already one of my favorite Memphis museums, but they've added a few new interactive features this year that make it even better.
The first is what Tim Sampson, Stax's communications director, describes as "the world's largest iPad".
And it kind of is. The giant iPad has an interactive map of the neighborhood that surrounds the museum and all of its soul music landmarks, including the childhood homes of a ton of Memphis kids that would grow up to be soul legends. Tap the markers for more information, photos and music.
They've also added listening stations to the hall of records where you can listen to songs recorded at Stax. The collection of songs isn't complete yet, but the hope is to have every song recorded for Stax available for listening. Currently, you can hear all of the greatest hits as well as some more obscure cuts.
My favorite of the new editions, though, is the photobooth. You pick out appropriate costume accoutrements, then stand in front of a green screen doing your best pose. One of the Stax employees takes your picture and inserts you into either the control room, the church or onto the Soul Train dance floor.
Here's what they come out looking like:
The 8x10" photos cost $10 each, and you can do them alone or in a group - the green screen is huge.
The Stax Museum of American Soul Music is open Tuesdays - Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and on Sundays from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. Admission is $12 adults and $9 for kids (though kids ages 8 and under get in free).
