Better Know a Memphian: Rinnie Wood

Rinnie Wood, Memphis, Tenn.

In her job as the fitness director at Trezevant retirement community, Rinnie Wood leads excersize classes for senior citizens. Here, she answers my questions about her favorite music to play during classes, the best places to be outside in Memphis and her guilty pleasures:

Name: Rinnie Wood

Occupation: Fitness Director, Trezevant Retirement Community

Hometown: Memphis

Neighborhood: Central Gardens

I love my job because: the people at Trezevant are truly the most delightful, generous, fun and inspirational you can imagine. There is a reason TV journalist Tom Brokaw called them “The Greatest Generation.”

My favorite place to be outside in Memphis is: on the paths along the Mississippi River.

It’s Friday night. You’ll find me: at some eatery in Cooper-Young or midtown. It is a gift to live so near so many wonderful places with both great food and atmosphere.

My favorite music to play during fitness classes is: Glenn Miller’s patriotic marches and recently Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong and Michael Buble. However, line dancing has encouraged the "Electric Slide" and "Cupid Shuffle".

The most surprising thing about Memphis is: our citizens’ unwillingness to acknowledge all the natural and manmade gifts we have here.

I’m inspired by: people who manage their lives in a way that allows them to be carefree and independent, closely connected to their families, yet committing to a role in making this world a better place.

The last book I read was: "The Paris Wife", which is about the life of author Ernest Hemmingway and his first wife. It takes place in various locations in the U.S. and Europe and is a fascinating window on the artists and writers of the early 1900s.

The annual Memphis event I look most forward to is: the entire Memphis Tigers basketball season. It brings out the best and worst in many of us…never boring and always entertaining.

My guilty pleasure is: Mexican food with lots of chips and queso.

I love Memphis because: it is urban with a variety of cultures, neighborhoods, entertainment, food and recreation but without many of the daily frustrations of other large cities like traffic.
