365 Things to Do in Memphis #4: Listen to the Reigning Sound (for Free)

Today’s assignment: score the new Reigning Sound EP for free.

Reigning Sound

The Reigning Sound has been one of my favorite local bands since I was old enough to care about that sort of thing. They’re fronted by Greg Cartwright (a former member of the Oblivians), and they’re so much fun. Though the Reigning Sound isn’t based in Memphis anymore, their style and history are firmly rooted in the local rock’n’roll scene.

A lot of their songs are covers of girl group standards that have been fuzzed up with plenty of rock’n’roll guitar. Their original tracks are garage rock greatness, perfect for driving around with the windows down or playing at a party.

The only problem is, they haven’t released a full album since 2009.

The good news is that Scion has released an EP loaded with eight new songs that you can download for free. I love the slightly updated 1960s sounds of “Everything I Do Is Wrong” and “Lyin’ Girl”. If you needed another reason to take a listen, five of the songs were produced by Dan Auerbach (of the Black Keys).

Listen and download here.

I write about what’s going on with Memphis music, food, arts, events, sports, people, and culture. Memphians love Elvis and barbeque with a passion that must be seen to be believed, but there is so much more to this place.
