Meet Memphian No. 346, Nicole McAlvany

365 Memphians - Nicole McAlvany

346 / 365

Meet Memphian number 346 (in my series of 365), Nicole McAlvany. Here, the Rhodes student answers my questions about the most interesting people she's met in Memphis, where she wants to be in five years and what's up with the food stickers on her laptop:

Name: Nicole McAlvany

Occupation: student at Rhodes College

Hometown: Atlanta, Georgia

Neighborhood: Midtown

My laptop is covered in Memphis stickers because: I love Memphis food! It gives me a reason to talk about Memphis and its food when I'm at home in Atlanta. Central Barbecue nachos are too good not to brag about whenever I can.

When I grow up, I want to: Become a philosophy professor. Or a doctor. ...basically just stay in school forever.

If I could only eat at one Memphis restaurant for a month, it would be: Trolley Stop Market

The most difficult thing about living in Memphis is: Its difficult to walk places. Not only are there not many places close enough to Rhodes to walk to, its also a bad idea to walk anywhere after dark.

In five years, I hope that: I'll be working towards a PhD in philosophy. I also hope that I will have stayed in touch with all of the great friends I've made here.

My favorite thing about winter in Memphis is: It doesn't take too much ice and snow for classes to be cancelled.

Memphis coolest annual event is: Memphis in May Beale Street Music Festival. I love how many people it brings in, letting Memphis show off a little bit. I wish I could go to the other events of Memphis in May, but I usually leave to go back home before they start.

The most interesting person I’ve met in Memphis is: On my first night in Memphis before I moved into school, my dad and I ventured down to Beale Street, while it just so happened to be the middle of Elvis Week. We met "Elvis Priestly," who I later found out is an actual priest who regularly impersonates Elvis during his sermons. He was pretty interesting.

You know you’re from Memphis when: You know that North Carolina and Texas have nothing on Memphis barbecue.

I love Memphis because: Its a big city but feels like a small town. It has an old school kind of vibe that you can't really find anywhere else.
