Yolo Bakes Makes Cakes (and Poptarts and Cookies and Cupcakes)

When Lady Bugg bakery was offered a space in Hernando, Miss., they said goodbye to their bakery case inside midtown Yolo, leaving a lot of local treat fiends (myself included) a little bummed out.

But all is not lost (though, I still miss the coconut basil macaroons). Yolo expanded their frozen yogurt and gelato empire to include an in-house bakery called Yolo Bakes.

Bakery case at Yolo Bakes

The new bakery is run by Brandi Marter and Maggie Swett, two self-taught bakers who love cooking, food and delicious things that are a little messy to eat. They change what's in the bakery case daily while keeping a few standing favorites in stock. Right now, they're primarily dealing in cupcakes, cookies, cakes (including custom gelato cakes) and tarts, but they're planning to add fresh bread soon.

Treats from Yolo Bakes, Memphis, Tenn.

Here's what your looking at, clockwise from bottom center:

-  Coconut cupcake with whipped cream icing and coconut cream filling. It tasted like a fluffy, sweet coconut cloud.

- an Irish carbomb cupcake (chocolate stout cake with whipped cream icing and some sort of whiskey-based drizzle).

- Peppermint cupcake.

- A not-Hostess cupcake, which is basically a fancy version of the lunchbox classic with ganache icing and thick cream filling.

- Peanut butter and jelly cupcake. It's not for everyone, but if you love the sandwich, you'll probably like the cake version.

- A seasonally appropriate pumpkin cupcake with cream cheese icing (in the middle).

- Miature key lime pie with pecan crust. It was simple, but it was thick and tart and big enough to share.

- Nutella Pop-tart, which is like a regular Pop-tart, if regular Pop-tarts were made of awesome.

- A classic, perfectly textured chocolate chip cookie.

What you can't see is the plastic container of "crack cake", the world's most aptly named dessert. It's sort of like bread pudding, if bread pudding were made with leftover chocolate cake and covered in toffee. It's good hot, it's good cold. It's good for breakfast. It's good while driving, if you've got someone to feed you pieces of it.

Currently, Yolo Bakes is only open at the Midtown location, but they're suppling all of the baked toppings to all of Yolo's locations. You can score baked goods every day during regular store hours, or have breakfast on the weekends (I've heard that the cinnamon rolls are incredible).

I love Yolo's yogurt and gelato. And I really want to like their baked goods, but it just ain't happening. Maybe they were good when this post was written in 2011, but I have never had anything worth eating. They were never better than just "meh." What made me finally give up on them was the stale blondie. It was so hard it crunched when bitten. :-(
