Grab Your Wheels: Memphis' First Public Skate Park is Open

Grab your wheels and check out Memphis' first public skate park, which opened earlier this month at Tobey Park.

Memphis public skate park, Memphis, Tenn.

The park has been in the works since 2006. It's not huge, but there are two big bowls, plenty of ramps and rails, stairs and a snake run. There's plenty for skaters of all levels in the $500,000 park. Some bowls are deep, some ramps are steep, but there are lots of easier sections for beginners. If you're not into skating, there are plenty of benches perfect for watching.

The park is open to all ages, but skaters play at their own risk. Protective gear is recommended for adults, and kids under the age of 12 are required to wear protective gear (knee pads, elbow pads and a helmet) and be accompanied by an adult.

The park isn't just for skateboarders. Roller skates, inline skates and bicycles are welcome at the park (Monday is the park's designated bike day).

When I stopped by this morning, the park was empty save for a guy named Eric who was doing tricks on a bicycle. We talked for a few minutes, and he had this to say about the park: "This place is great. It's like I'm on a road trip I've been looking forward to for a long time. I can't believe this is in Memphis."

The skate park is located at Tobey Park, behind the Board of Education (at Central and Hollywood). It's free and open from 6 a.m. - 6 p.m. in the fall and winter and from 6 a.m. - 8 p.m. during the spring and summer.

Get your roller skates and helmet on Kerry! The bowls and snake-run would be a blast with roller skates and there are plenty of places to "roll-in" without having to go over the metal pipe coping.  Thanks for posting!  As Kris said, helmets are mandatory for all ages.
