Meet Memphian No. 314 (of 365): E.J. Friedman
Meet Memphian no. 314 in the 365 Memphians series, E.J. Friedman. He's a writer (his blog, Loudersoft.com, is one of my favorite ways to find out about new music), media advisor and generally lovely person.
Here, he answers my questions about his favorite local events, where he takes his out of town friends, and five of his favorite made-in-Memphis records:
Name: E.J. Friedman
Occupation: Publisher, Loudersoft.com / Film & TV Freelancer / Media Advisor
Hometown: Memphis, Tenn.
Neighborhood: Midtown
My favorite Memphis music event is: the International Folk Alliance Conference (which, sadly, is leaving Memphis after next year).
The best thing to happen to Memphis in the last year was: the 14th annual Indie Memphis Film Festival.
When friends come to Memphis from out of town, I make sure they go to: Broad Avenue Arts District, American Dream Safari, Pho Binh, Brother Juniper's, the Stax Museum, Goner Records, Wild Bill's, Earnestine & Hazel's, the Memphis Zoo and (if they have time) Jerry's Snow Cone.
I hope that: Memphis and Memphians continue finding ways to grow a progressive, non-discriminatory community that recognizes marriage equality and workplace protection for everyone regardless of race, creed, color or sexual orientation.
I’m excited about: the new bike lanes & the plans to further develop bike lanes around the city.
My top five Made in Memphis records are: (I can't pick just five, so here's the first five I thought of):
O.V. Wright - “Ace of Spades”
Syl Johnson - “Total Explosion”
Big Star, "Radio City"
Project Pat - “Ghetty Green”
Pavement - “Wowee Zowie”
Lichterman Nature Center is the most underrated thing in Memphis.
If I could move anything (or anyone) from another city to Memphis, it would be: Trader Joe's.
When I grow up, I want to be: financially able to support the arts on a broader scale.
I love Memphis because: no matter where I go, Memphis has always felt like home.
