Listen Up: "Tennessee" by Carl Perkins
If you're feeling a little low on state pride today, take a listen to Carl Perkins' "Tennessee", a song celebrating all of the things that are made in the great state of Tennessee.
Perkins, who was originally from rural West Tennessee, recorded at Sun Studio in the 1950s. Though he grew up much closer to Memphis than Nashville, his song praises Tennessee music "as they play it up in Nashville every day." Maybe he didn't want to offend people on either side of the state, so he picked the city closest to the middle. I'm not sure.
Memphis-based garage band the Reigning Sound recorded a version that inspires a little more hometown pride. Music "as they play it down in Memphis" for sure.
