Southern Belle Brings Some Soul to Madison (Closed)

Southern Belle Brings Some Soul to Madison (Closed)

Southern Belle, Memphis' newest Cajun-inspired soul food joint, opened last week, and good news - they deliver.

Southern Belle, Memphis, Tenn.

The premise at Southern Belle is simple. There's one entree offering every day, and you get that plus your choice of side item and a roll for $7.50. You can either order in and eat at one of the restaurant's four tables, take out, or have it delivered.

I decided to go the take-out route. The guys working behind the counter had my food boxed up and ready to go in less time than it took me to place my order.

Wednesday is crawfish etouffee day at Southern Belle, so that's what I had.

Crawfish Etoufee from Southern Belle, Memphis, Tenn.

The etouffee was pretty light. It had a little bit of kick to it, but wasn't so spicy that it required multiple glasses of water. The long-gran rice was perfectly cooked, and I liked the green onions. The portions are large enough to set aside some for leftovers, but you might struggle not to eat all of it in one sitting.

I had a hard time deciding on a side dish, because so many sounded good. I chose the mac'n'cheese was alright, but it could have been a little more gooey and cheesy. Next time, I'll probably try the marinated tomatoes and cucumbers or the Mississippi cheddar grits.

The dinner roll was great - it was soft and warm and just a tiny bit sweet. I ate mine plain, but I bet they would be awesome with some butter and honey.

I should also point out that when the guys at Southern Belle packed up my order, they included a big stack of napkins and some plastic cutlery. It's a little thing, but I take it as a sign that they care.

Southern Belle is open for lunch from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m., Monday through Friday. Here's a rundown of the daily entrees:

Monday: Red beans and rice with Cajun smoked sausage

Tuesday: Beef tips over roasted garlic mashed potatoes

Wednesday: Crawfish etouffee over basmati rice pilaf

Thursday: Bourbon peach glazed pork loin with Mississippi grits

Friday: Blackened chicken pasta tossed in Creole tomato sauce.

If you're looking for something light (or if you don't eat meat), you can order a veggie plate for $5 (three side items and a roll) or $6.50 (four side items and a roll). If you're in Midtown or Downtown, Southern Belle will deliver your lunch.

We have had the pleasure of eating in the small MidnTown Bistro "The Southern Belle" a number of times in the past few weeks. What a wonderful surprise for Memphis . . .A small, very clean Bistro with a GREAT young four star chef (David Johnson) and superb food A southerner, born to the GRITS , so to speak . . . I am going on the record that the Mississippi cheddar GRITS are the finest I have ever eaten. Go - eat then tell every one you know and GO AGAIN Enjoy
