Random Memphis Cover Song of the Week
The AV Club, a pop culture blog that's run by the same people that run the Onion, is doing a pretty cool series of cover songs right now.
They posted a list of proposed songs that would be covered by current bands. People voted for their favorites and a list of 27 songs was compiled. Once a band covers a song, it's taken off of the list, so the later a band joins the project, the fewer songs they have to choose from.
There are two Memphis songs on the list, and only one of them has been covered so far. The Dum Dum Girls, an all-girl garage-pop band, covered Big Star's "September Gurls".
Now, there are only two songs left - "The Other Woman" by Loretta Lynn and Memphis legend Otis Redding's "Try a Little Tenderness".
I can understand why bands have avoided Otis. It's got to be hard to cover a song that everyone knows so well, a song that's so perfect in its original state.
If you could hear any band cover "Try a Little Tenderness", who would it be?
