Prom for All Celebrates Community and Acceptance

Prom for All Celebrates Community and Acceptance

(Ed. note - This post was written by I Love Memphis' intern, Intern Jerel. Expect to see more of his writing throughout the summer. -K)

With everything that the Memphis Gay and Lesbian Community Center has gone through recently - specifically their recent struggle to overcome their financial straits - the MGLCC needed something to celebrate. And this year’s Prom for All was definitely a celebration.

The event was hosted by the MGLCC and the Double Tree downtown with music from DJ Lady Problems.

The ballroom was festively decorated with towers of balloons flanking the stage, disco balls placed a top of poles on the VIP tables, and enough lights and lasers to satisfy any seasoned party-goer.

I don’t think there was a person there that night that wasn’t infected by the feeling of sheer joy that was going around the prom. That joy didn’t come from the the decorations, or the music, or even the the drinks.

Prom for All

It came from what Prom for All meant to many of the attendees and to those that weren’t there. To some it meant a night of romance and a chance to be with the one that they love. To some, it was proof that change is happening, and to others it was a night to have a good time.

For attendee Nancy McAnn Prom for All is "A night of romance and a chance to be with the one you love".

The annual event is one of the largest fundraisers for the MGLCC. The money raised goes to the many programs that the center sponsors. Such as their work with the homeless gay youth, of not only Memphis, but surrounding the 200 mile surrounding area as well. The center has a major impact on many people in both Tennessee and the surrounding states, so events like these help with the MGLCC's funding.

Will Batts, director of the MGLCC, said may have said it best:  “It reminds Memphis why they love this place so much.”

No matter the personal significance of Prom for All, one thing is true:  the prom  is a night of celebration, and next year I advise that you go because it’s one big party for a great cause.
