Meet Memphian no. 132 - Andria Lisle

365 Memphians - Andria Lisle

Andria Lisle is one of the coolest people I've met in Memphis - she's a talented journalist, a lady about town, and one of those people who seems to be involved in everything. Here, she talks about her work at the Brooks Museum of Art, her favorite new records, and what she really wants to do this weekend.

Name: Andria Lisle

Occupation:
Public Programs and Public Relations Manager at the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art.

Hometown: We moved seven times during my childhood, but I’ve been in Memphis since 1985, so for the short version of my bio, I consider this my hometown.

Neighborhood: Fairgrounds area of Midtown.

My favorite thing about working at the Brooks is: everything. Coming to a fulltime position at a non-profit after working as a freelance journalist for a decade was incredibly intimidating, but I love my work, all my co-workers, and especially the environment, from the moment I drive into Overton Park to strolling through the museum galleries.

My favorite Memphis record from the last year was: Tough question! How about a four-way tie between Harlan T. Bobo’s Sucker, and debuts from the Magic Kids, Glorie, and the Luv Clowns?

The perfect Memphis weekend would involve: lunch at Payne’s or the Cozy Corner after foraging at the farmers market, spending an unlimited budget on vinyl LPs, dinner with friends on my back patio, and rock'n'roll at the Hi-Tone or the Buccaneer, followed by a late-night stop into the Lamplighter for one more beer.

My favorite piece of art is: There are two: Luca Giordano’s 17th century Baroque rendition of the Perseus-Medusa legend, which features Gorgon wings that are so vivid that they look like they were added to the painting last week, and Arthur Dove'’s folksy Car in Garage, which was painted in 1934 and hangs in our American galleries.

I hope that: Memphis continues to move forward in regards to urban planning, civic education, and more free, fun things to do that both celebrate and enhance our community.

The best kept secret at the Brooks is: the vast number of outreach programs developed by our education department, which include school mural projects, art programs for at-risk youth, and tours for Memphians afflicted with Alzheimer’s.

The coolest person I’ve met in Memphis is: Too many to mention – in my former career, I worked for Ike Turner, and, as a journalist, interviewed everyone from Scotty Moore to 8Ball & MJG. These days, Mayor Wharton is the coolest guy.

I want to: Do more to aid those who rescue injured and abused animals, and educate Memphians on spay-neuter programs and the importance of pet adoption.
I love Memphis because: People are friendly, the cost of living is inexpensive, and it’s extraordinarily easy to effect change.

I've known Andria since she was a young teenager. She was just as cool and smart then as she is now. Andria is really what's happening in Memphis. Go Andrea!
