Memphis Music at SXSW: 2011 Preview

Memphis Music at SXSW: 2011 Preview

Memphis musicians are (once again) making a huge showing in Austin this week for South By Southwest. There's no official Memphis showcase this year, but that doesn't mean there's a shortage of opportunities for our local scene to represent.

If you'd like to get some authentic Memphis rock'n'roll, I recommend any of these shows:

- Star and Micey, Wednesday (3/16), Hilton Garden Inn, 12 a.m.

Star and Micey at SXSW 2010

Memphis' most adorable trio is returning to SXSW this year for two shows - the one at the Hilton Garden Inn on Wednesday and one at the Memphis Music Foundation booth at the trade show. Their dreamy pop songs are surprising, especially live where the boys can fully demonstrate their ability to go from rock'n'roll loud to whisper quiet in an instant.

- American Gods, Thursday (3/17) Gypsy Lounge, 7 p.m.

Heavily influenced by early alternative rock, American Gods are a five=piece wall of noise rock goodness. They just released their new EP, "Chariot the Ghost" on Withdrawl Records, which is based in Austin.

- Amy LaVere, Thursday (3/17), Swan Dive, 10 p.m.

Amy LaVere is mesmerizing. She's tiny, almost dwarfed by her upright bass. She's part chanteuse, part Wanda Jackson (who she played in the film "Walk the Line") and part honky tonk darling. Her sound goes from delicate, pretty ballads to stompers that have her slapping her bass around like an ex-boyfriend in a revenge fantasy.

- Valerie June, Thursday (3/17), Hilton Garden Inn, 10 p.m.

With her signature dreads and big smile, Valerie June is all charm. She's also got a completely unique voice that goes well with her rootsy Southern pop. She sort of reminds me of a one-woman version of the Carolina Chocolate Drops.

- Free Sol, Friday (3/18), Speakeasy, 4:40 p.m.

Free Sol is a Memphis stalwart, consistently playing around town (and elsewhere) since 2003. Their sound is a blend of Memphis influences, a combination of bluesy rock, soul and hip hop.

- Limes, Friday (3/18), Beerland, 9 p.m.

Limes' last record, "Rhinestone River" is the perfect soundtrack for late summer late-night front porch drinking. The sound is lazy and boozy, and singer Shawn Cripps sounds a little bit like David Berman (of the Silver Jews).

- Harlan T. Bobo, Friday (3/18), Beerland, 9:45 p.m.

If you're going to Beerland to see Limes, you need to stay to see Harlan T. Bobo's solo show. Harlan T. Bobo is everything I love about Memphis music, rolled into one mysterious, hard-working man. In the last year, he released his third record (the sunnier "Sucker") and started a children's band with three other legendary Memphians (called Luv Clowns).

- Cloudland Canyon, Friday (3/18), Emo's Jr., 11 p.m.

If you're into all things experimental, make sure you check out Cloudland Canyon's Friday show at Emo's Jr. They play interesting, textural electronic music. (Sidenote - former Memphian Hi-Tone Dan is now doing the booking at Emo's. If you see him, say hello!)

- Skewby, Friday (3/18), Fuze, 11:30 p.m.

Skewby loves Memphis

I'm excited to see one of my favorite local rappers on the bill at SXSW. Skewby's totally earned it. His last self-produced mixtape, "More or Less" is a record about how thrilling and trying the creative process can be. With clear East and West coast influences, his sound is unlike that of other Memphis rappers. Plus, his live shows are super fun.

- Bosco Del Rey, Saturday (3/19), Friends, 10:20 p.m.

Expect a lot of early Sun Studio influence in Bosco Del Rey's Saturday show at Friends. He's a one-man band with a guitar, a drum machine and influences ranging from dirty South rap to old-school hymns. His first record, "Everybody Wah" is scheduled for release later this month.

- Shannon McNally, Saturday (3/19), Hilton Garden Inn, 11 p.m.

Shannon McNally is an experienced road performer, so expect her to bring her A-game to the Hilton Garden Inn on Saturday. She's got a slightly raspy voice and a light country sound. If you like Lucinda Williams, Emmy Lou Harris and Gillian Welch, you'll probably love Shannon.

- River City Tanlines, Saturday (3/19), Easy Tiger, 11 p.m.

Alicja Trout of the River City Tanlines

Before you go to Easy Tiger on Saturday to see the Tanlines, take a few minutes to prepare to have your face rocked off. Frontwoman Alicja Trout leads her garage rock three piece with enthusiasm, plenty of head banging and a big, white Flying V.

If that's not enough, Memphis bands will be performing every afternoon at the Memphis Music Foundation booth at the trade show at the convention center. Stop by, say hi and pick up some stickers and info on all of the great things happening in Memphis.

I'm glad to see Shannon McNally promoted anywhere (especially as she is here, with Music In The Hall) but am curious about her being described as Memphis music.
