A Night Out at the Dublin House (closed)

A Night Out at the Dublin House (closed)

It always makes me happy to see a new business open, especially when that new business opens in a spot that's been unoccupied forever.

A few weeks ago, the Dublin House opened in the old Melos Taverna space on Madison (right across from the Blue Monkey).

If the name didn't make it obvious, the Dublin House is an Irish pub. The dark, wooden interior is dotted with Guiness signs and flat-screen TVs that were all playing basketball. Smoking is allowed inside, but the space is large and well-ventilated. While I loved atmosphere of the darker parts of the bar, the pool tables bathed in beer-lights seemed a little too frat house for the rest of the space.

The Dublin House's Irish-ness extends to the small menu. Most of the items are slightly classier pub grub - beef and Guiness rib tips, pork shanks, rotisserie chicken legs and cheese steaks. Sadly, there aren't many options for vegetarians beyond the portobello mushroom sliders and fried cheese.

I had the fish and chips, a basket of hot, crispy beer-battered fish and a heaping pile of fries.

It was really good. I would go back to Dublin House just to eat this again. The batter was light and crispy and the portion was generous. The fries were nearly perfect.

When I went, the drink selection was limited by the fact that the bar had applied for, but didn't have its liquor license yet. There were about 15 craft beers in bottles and some domestics (Guiness, Budweiser, etc.) on tap.

The Dublin House is open daily, starting in the afternoons. When I went, it was cash only, but there was an ATM (and credit cards will probably be accepted eventually).

That batter looks excellent. I'll have to put my plans to try Dublin House a little further up the to-do list.

When we went on Saturday it accepted ATM/Credit Cards. And they must have their liquor license because they had a stocked bar. We got the cheese shots and really liked the spicy ones.

We stopped in at the Dublin House a few weeks ago. It was okay. Better than some other bars in the area. At the time the Dublin House only offered two different kinds of beer. I did like the pool tables and the d.j. played some good music. The prices for drinks were pretty good as well. We didn't try the food. Slán T

It's a shame that they allow smoking. It rules the place out for me and for many other Memphians. It's time to move into the 21st century. Smoking isn't even allowed in pubs in Ireland any more.

Since bars are really for people who want to go out drinking and have a good time with their friends, I'm not against smoking in bars and making them 21 and up. I actually wish ALL bars would allow it, because if you're a smoker you know how frustrating it is to have to walk outside while your out with your friends every time you want a smoke break. I love that more bars are saying "SCREW YOU" to the smoking law and making themselves 21 and up! You will have my business for sure Dublin House! I sure love a place I can smoke and play pool at the same time!

Jukebox was broken when I was there. Also watch out for creepy old Irish guys in sweatpants.

All bars would allow it if not for the pernicious state and its arbitrary laws of force. It's amazing that a predatory 3rd party that dresses itself up as "the government" can tell a property owner how he/she needs to run his/her business. You need to get in with the 21st century, Claire. Force is out. Choice and free exchange between individuals is in. Google my guy Murray Rothbard and learn something new.

I think smoking should be ALLOWED in bars by law. I just wish more bars would CHOOSE to be non-smoking. That would be a huge draw for us.
