Random Holiday Art Project of the Week
According to early morning reports from those on the scene in Pennsylvania, our nation's favorite weather-reporting groundhog, Punxsutawny Phil, didn't see his shadow this morning, meaning that spring will come early this year.
Across the country, school children are celebrating with groundhog-themed arts and crafts project. Make your own groundhog puppet and have your own Groundhog Day celebration, minus the old men in top hats wrangling an unwilling critter.
It's easy!
Step one: Assemble your supplies.
You need: tape, a cup, a skewer or straw, some scissors (or other sharp object), and the groundhog picture of your choice.
Step 2: Attach your groundhog.
Tape the groundhog to your stick. I chose some festive green duct tape, but just about any kind will do.
Step 3: Make a hole in the cup.
This is the dangerous part. Kids, you may want to get an adult. Adults, you may want to wear safety goggles.
Use your sharp object (scissors, knife, whatever) to poke a small hole in the bottom of the cup. It doesn't have to be pretty. You're going for something like this:
Step 4: Put the groundhog in the hole.
Flip the cup over and stick the non-groundhog end of the stick through the hole.
Voila! You're done!
To predict the weather, pop the groundhog out of the hole. If he sees his shadow, it's going to stay cold for six more weeks. If he doesn't, pleasant weather is headed our way soon.
(I'm not the only one who remembers making these in elementary school, am I?)
