Made in Memphis: 10 Ways to Shop Super Local
Made in Memphis: 10 Ways to Shop Super Local
Want to shop like a local? Here are 10 places where you can find made-in-Memphis goods:
1. Mrs. Post Stationery (3092 Poplar Ave)
If you're having a party, need to make a major announcement, just want to send some old-fashioned correspondence, Mrs. Post is the place to go for adorable stationery. All of their pieces are designed and printed locally for the shop owners' brand, Lemon Tree Paper. They do custom work, too.
2. Hoot + Louise (109 G. E. Patterson Avenue)
The newest boutique in the South Main Arts District carries vintage clothing, styles from small, lesser-known designers, jewelry and handmade housewares. Their locally screen-printed pillows, towels and prints will dress up any space.
3. Sache (25 S Main St.)
All of Sache's t-shirts are made in-house at the shop's South Main location. Designer Eric Evans screen prints logos, renaissance designs and graffiti-inspired art on super soft jersey t-shirts. They've got t-shirts and tank tops for men, women and kids.
4. Goner Records (2152 Young Avenue)
Goner Records is more than a store - it's one of Memphis' most awesome labels. The label's records (from artists like Harlan T. Bobo, No Bunny, Limes and Cococoma) are sold in the store, along with a huge selection of garage, soul and punk rock 45s and LPs. Goner is also one of the best places for Memphis-themed t-shirts (like the ones from Memphis Incorporated).
5. Trolley Stop Market (704 Madison Avenue)
The walls at Memphis' favorite locavore restaurant are lined with plenty of handmade-in-Memphis goodies. They carry everything from homegrown produce to knitwear, water bottles, handmade soaps and pottery made by local designers.
Kerry and Ann from Thigh High Jeans give new life to old jeans by adding fabric panels and embroidered quotes on the thighs. You can send a pair of jeans in for refurbishing, or you can take your chances with their recycled inventory. You don't get any say in the quote, though - Kerry and Ann pick it out for you based on a series of questions you answer when you place your order.
7. DeNovo Style
San Fransiscan-turned-Memphian Elizabeth Holliday hand sews each one of DeNovo Style's vintage-inspired coats in her Cooper Young studio. Her designs range from dressed-up sweatshirt jackets to lined wool trench coats.
8. St. Blues Guitar (645 Marshall Avenue)
If you want to own a piece of Memphis Music, you can't go wrong with a Bluesmaster guitar from St. Blues. All of their electric guitars are designed and finished in their downtown Memphis shop. If you want quality but can't pay full price, check out the scratch and dent rack for instruments with minor defects that won't affect the sound.
9. Five in One (423 N. Watkins)
Local artists' collective Five in One (aka VINI) is one of my go-to sources for gifts. You can represent with one of their Memphis-themed t-shirts or rock'n'roll show prints. They've also got handmade jewelry and knitwear and occasionally, the shop has custom screen printing parties.
10. Mi-Me
Scrub your problems away with Mi-Me's handmade scrubs, body butters and bath bombs. Everything is made from natural ingredients (think salt, sugar, shea butter and oatmeal) and scented with essential oils. You can get their products made-to-order online or locally at Miss Cordelia's grocery.
