A More Mature Skewby Works It Out on "More or Less"
Just when I thought my crush on local rapper Skewby couldn't get any bigger, he goes and releases the only rap song I've ever heard about paying student loans.
It sounds weird, but it's not out of place on the local rapper's second full-length mixtape, "More or Less". It's a more mature record, one filled with worry about money, work, and making tough choices. Recent graduates (and those of us who still owe Sallie Mae thousands of dollars) will raise their fists in solidarity when Skewby says "Payin' dues like tryin' to pay for school, you can graduate, but can't afford to buy food".
Personally, I'm a little ashamed to admit how much I can relate to lines like "I hate sleep, so I'm in a position that makes me work more than I eat" (from "Eleven:58") and "I can't eat lunch 'cause I think I should be grinding".
Don't expect a ton of club bangers on "More or Less". Instead, the record's 14 tracks are quietly grinding, more subtle than swagger. They're still party appropriate, though, especially the bouncy "Lost & Found". Skewby's voice is strong and articulate, but breathy like he just ran a 5k.
At 22, Skewby may seem a little young to be such a workaholic. It's paying off though - he was named as one of the Memphis Flyer's "20 Under 30", and it seems like he's playing shows (or releasing more tracks and videos) on a weekly basis.
You can download "More or Less" for free via Skewby's website. You can also catch him live at the Hi-Tone tomorrow night at 9 p.m. with Freddie Gibbs.
