365 Memphians: Day 1

365 Memphians: Day 1

I'm doing Project 365 again this year, but with an added challenge - one portrait of a Memphian (or honorary Memphian) per day.

With that, the first portrait in the series: me.

Kerry Crawford - 365 Memphians

My name is Kerry Crawford, and I run the I Love Memphis blog. I took this self-portrait at Otherlands, my usual morning workhole. Next time you're there, say hi, ok?

What a fantastic self portrait!! I've never been able to master the art of self-portraiture and am always inspired by those who have. You, my dear, certainly have! Kudos to you, and the best year yet! :-)

I have a funny random dorky question for you as I must have somehow missed this... btw im laughin very hard at it right now... but on June 17th, 2010 on Twitter you (I believe) asked me this at 2:22 PM: @sortwright Are you currently wearing a tux? in reply I guess... to my 'tweet' of: Sortwright - "Eating in Memphis, missing my daughter excited for my brother. Wonder what to do in a tux?!? LOL" ...I always understood twitter kinda, i suppose but... apparently not the interacting messages and replies and comments, or direct messaging apparently.. but regardless i think this answer will be funny. Thanks for your time! Josh Wright [email protected] www.facebook.com/sortwright www.twitter.com/sortwright And enlighten me... lol... why? Yes I was btw...

Kerry, I love this site and thing you do a great job. However, there's one glaring issue that really bothers me about it. The racial demographic distribution of Memphis is roughly 63% African-American and 30% Caucasian. Because I apparently have nothing better to do -- I just did a count of your Project 365 photographs. Out of the 129 that I could find, here's the demographic distribution: African-American: 16 (12%) Caucasian: 106 (82%) Hispanic: 2 (2%) Two of those African-Americans are/were Grizzlies players, and one of those Hispanics was the Chilean miner that visited Graceland. Isn't the purpose of this site to show people "the best Memphis has to offer"? The racial discrepancy of those Memphians you include in your Project 365 is ridiculous to the point of being laughable. I understand that you're a white midtowner (as am I), but surely there are more interesting African-Americans than the measly 12% that you've included. As an employee of the Memphis Convention and Visitor's Bureau, don't you think it'd be appropriate to paint a more accurate picture of the city for those visitors? I realize that you're only one person, so perhaps the solution would be for your office to hire a co-blogger to illustrate other aspects of the city. I read this site daily, and will continue to do so, but my suggestion would be to change the name to I Love (White, Midtown, Hipster) Memphis. This site is the external face of Memphis for a lot of visitors and newcomers, but if I was a visitor looking at it I'd think that everyone here was white, had an iPhone 4 and MacBook Pro, and shopped at Urban Outfitters. Almost all of those apply to myself as well, but surely it is far from representing what Memphis is as a whole.

Hi Kyle, Thanks for your comment. It's something I've noticed, too, and it bothers me as well. You hit on one of the major problems - I'm only one person. I've got an intern starting in the summer, but the blog is really a one-lady operation. When I started this year's project 365, it was a pretty ambitious thing - finding someone who's willing to be photographed every day for a year is kind of intense. So, I started with a call for volunteers. I wanted to feature people that wanted to be featured, and I wanted it to be a way for me to meet more people. Many of the people featured are the people who have volunteered. I'm constantly trying to find a more diverse pool of people that are doing something cool or interesting. I definitely want to make the people and subject matter featured on the blog as diverse as possible. It's not perfect yet, but I'm really appreciative of your thought-provoking comment. If you've got any suggestions, I'd love to hear them. You didn't leave an email address, but I'd be really interested in talking with you more about this. Maybe you have some suggestions? Email me at [email protected]. Thanks, Kerry
