The City Champs: Memphis and Proud Of It

The City Champs: Memphis and Proud Of It

When I listen to records by local bands, I tend to wonder if they've spent a lot of time contemplating Memphis' musical legacy and their place in it. With the City Champs, there's no question. They're from Memphis and their sound is proud of it.

The City Champs

The City Champs' new record, "The Set-Up" is one of those rare records that sounds both fresh and modern and completely timeless. The record, which was released earlier this week, sounds like it could have come from the glory days of Stax.

"The Set-Up" is 51 minutes of instrumental goodness. Joe Restivo's guitar is 1970's pulp movie perfection, and Al Gamble's organ sound borrows heavily from Booker T. and the MGs. It's a great party record, but I've been really enjoying listening to it while I work.

The trio is currently on tour, but they're returning to Memphis to play a show at the 1884 Lounge at Minglewood Hall on November 12th. Tickets are $8 at the door.
