Our Free Art Museum: Memphis Public Art Map

Maybe it's something in our delicious water, but Memphis seems to grow a ton of hyper-talented creative innovators. While we're most well known for all of our amazing musical talent, Memphis is home to an impressive collection of visual artists.

Thanks to the Urban Arts Commission, the city and the artists' own guerilla skills, many of these awesome works are on public display all over town.

The pieces, which range from murals to sculptures to complete oddities, are spread out all over the city. Think of it as a free public art museum.

In 2011, a group of Rhodes College students founded the Memphis Art Project, a map and directory of all the public art in the city. Today, students still run the website, which you can check out here. You can also follow them on Instagram here.

Kerry, I wonder if you know about the Wikipedia Saves Public Art project. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Wikipedia_Saves_Public_Art) The general aim of WSPA is document and write informative articles about public art. It started with a project in Indianapolis, and now folks in Milwaukee & Washington DC are starting to document public art in their cities. Thanks for posting these & linking them to a map!

Where exactly is the Wall of Memphis Lyrics on South Main? I've seen most of these, but never that wall. So cool!

Greetings!! I Just found this site - can't seem to pull up the map- I am coming to Memphis this weekend, June 20 - June 22, 2013 (!)  with a Springfield MO group, who are looking at Downtown Development. I am a public artist and am especially interested in how Public Art helps  (re)vitalize communities.   Our group includes our Mayor, city planners, Arts Council folks, investors, developers, and commoners like me.    They mostly are looking at law enforcement and policy issues. I feel there is more than one way "to skin a cat" , Public Art being Key among them - I am working hard to get this point across.  Got any suggestions of special things to see or people I can  meet up with?

This is such a neat idea! I can't seem to get the map to load, though. I'd love to see this post updated!
