Getting The Goat at La Guadalupana
Getting The Goat at La Guadalupana
When we made plans to go to Taqueria la Guadalupana for lunch today, my friend Zach insisted on one thing: that I try a goat taco.
La Guadalupana is widely considered to be one of the best, most authentic Mexican restaurants in Memphis. It's the sort of place where the meats listed on the menu include tongue and tripe. They've won tons of "Best of Memphis" awards, and their food is the stuff of word-of-mouth legend. Even the most picky eaters among my friends know about La Guadalupana's goat tacos.
So that's what I ordered - one goat taco, one chicken taco, and one spicy pork quesadilla.
The tacos are very authentic - two warm corn tortillas covered in meat, cilantro, onions and lime juice. The goat was different. Really, incredibly good, but different. Goat is tender, but a little gamy (the texture is sort of like what would happen if lamb and pork were fused together). The shredded meat was a little spicy.
My spicy pork quesadilla was way bigger than I thought it would be. It was stuffed with shredded savory pork, melted cheese and onions. I wish I could describe the taste a little bit better, but my notes just say "spicy pork, OMG. OMG."
Taqueria La Guadalupana is open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner. All of the tacos are less than $2, and most entrees are less than $11.
