5 Things To Do in Memphis This Weekend - 6/4 - 6/6
Welcome to June, everybody. The weather may be a little on the sticky side, but there are still a ton of reasons to get out and do things.
1. Memphis Italian Festival, Marquette Park, Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m., $10
For the past 21 years, the Memphis Italian Festival has been bringing all sorts of Italian goodness to Marquette Park in East Memphis. It's considered one of the best family-friendly community events in town. There are cooking competitions, bands, vendors, pizza tossing, grape stomping and bocce ball. You can purchase food from vendors, but not from cooking tents, and you're welcome to bring a blanket and chill on the lawn.
If you missed your high school prom, or are feeling a little nostalgic, check out the Prom For All tomorrow night at the Doubletree. Anyone 18 or older is welcome to attend with the date of their choosing. It's sponsored by the Memphis Gay and Lesbian Community Center, and Mississippi high school student Candace McMillen will be the guest of honor. There's going to be a cash bar, a light buffet, a DJ and plenty of prom fun.
3. Bands Not Bombs, Lifelink Church (Cooper and Walker), Saturday, 2 p.m., $10
After you check out the Cooper Young Farmer's Market on Saturday morning, stick around for the annual Bands Not Bombs show benefiting the Mid-South Peace and Justice Center. The day-long show features 7 local bands (including Star and Micey, the Magic Kids, Bluff City Backsliders, and Bake Sale), belly dancing and fire eating. If you're worried about the heat, there's going to be an afternoon water balloon fight and an inflatable water slide. Kids, lawn chairs, and blankets are welcome.
Project:Motion dance collective is closing out their 23rd season in their brand new space at the Evergreen Theatre (the old Circuit Playhouse). Eight choreographers choreographer paired with a different local artist to create modern dance pieces based on the concept of "blue". The show runs this weekend and next weekend, and on Sunday, June 6, you can buy one adult ticket and get one free.
5. Diana Ross Live at the Garden, Memphis Botanic Gardens, Saturday, $44
Pack your picnic basket with fancy cheese and chicken salad, grab a blanket and head to the Memphis Botanic Garden to see Diana Ross open this year's Live at the Garden concert series. The series is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. The shows are a lot of fun, and they're definitely one of the places to see and be seen this summer.
Whatever you do, have a great weekend. If I've left anything out, feel free to leave information in the comments.
