We Can Make a Special Home: Harlan T. Bobo's "Sucker"
Happy Harlan is weird. Definitely not bad, mind you, just a little weird.
His first record, "Too Much Love" is one of the most epic break up records I've ever heard. His second, "I'm Your Man" is a rebound, a little more hopeful, but still held together by threads of heartache. I've listened through his brand-new third record "Sucker" about three times now, and I'm still trying to adjust to it's sunnier sound.
It makes sense that "Sucker" would be a little more settled and happy. Harlan recently got married and had a kid, and much of the record centers around his new little family.
Even though it's a happier record than he's released in the past, the songs are as consistently wonderful as those on his last records. I'm a big fan of "Mlle. Chatte", a simple song sung in French about cats and butter. The record gets a little louder in the middle with "Bad Boyfriends" (which will probably be played at my next dance party) and "Energy".
You can pick up a copy of "Sucker" at Goner Records or via the music retailer of your choice. Right now, it's only out as a CD and MP3s. It will be released on vinyl in a few months.
There's going to be a record release party for "Sucker" at the HiTone on Saturday, April 10. Cover is $7.
