Used Books for the Borrowing at the English Major Bookstore

Ed. Note: The English Major Bookstore closed in 2011. Head to our updated guide to Memphis bookstores right here.

English Major Bookstore, Memphis, Tenn. English Major Bookstore, Memphis, Tenn.

The English Major Bookstore combines two things I love - cheap books and out-of-the-way places. The tiny, cozy shop is tucked into a corner at Madison and Belvedere in Midtown, right behind the Lamplighter (another out-of-the-way favorite).

The shop's vibe is completely homey. It's a little dark, but there are comfortable chairs tucked away in the maze of shelves and quotes from famous authors tacked to the walls. When I was there, I was greeted at the door by two enthusiastic chihuahuas and shop owner Karin Morley offered me one of her homemade raw carrot pecan burgers.

The shelves in the English Major are stocked with used fiction, non-fiction, kids' books and rare volumes. All of the books are used. If you love books but can't commit, the English Major has a lending library that's sort of like Netflix for books. You pay a set price per month based on how many books you want to check out per visit. You can check out unlimited books per month from the shop's stock of fiction and non-fiction (rare books are excluded). Lending library plans start at $9.95 per month.

Right now, the English Major is open at noon Monday - Saturday, though Morley is planning to extend the hours soon.
