Pick It Up, Eat it There, Have It Delivered: Frank’s Deli on South Main (Closed)

Despite working downtown on and off for about two years and getting countless recommendations from friends, I hadn’t been to Frank’s Deli on South Main until yesterday.

Frank’s Deli is right next to the Green Beetle on South Main. It’s a convenience store more than a restaurant. There are two aisles, both lined with refrigerated cases full of beer and cold drinks. They carry some grocery items, snacks, a few odds and ends (aluminum foil, dish detergent), and the usual convenience store cigarettes, candy and newspapers.

You can’t see it when you walk in the door, but you can smell the magic happening at the deli counter in the back of the shop. The menu is mostly sandwiches, salads, and wraps, side dishes (coleslaw, hummus), and desserts (the carrot cake in the case looked amazing). Yesterday, the specials were a beef brisket sandwich and something called “Shawama”, which, based on the ingredients, was supposed to be shawarma.

You can eat in, take your food with you, or have it delivered to you by bicycle.

After eating my turkey sandwich, I’m not sure why I waited so long. It was delicious – a mound of fresh deli turkey, smothered in cheese, topped with lettuce, tomato, mayo, and black pepper. I paired it with a bag of chips and a bottle of cane sugar root beer.

I write about what’s going on with Memphis music, food, arts, events, sports, people, and culture. Memphians love Elvis and barbeque with a passion that must be seen to be believed, but there is so much more to this place.

They also have bottles of Mexican Coca-Cola available there (made with pure cane sugar). Fantastic choice to go with a sandwich.

This is the best and most underrated place downtown. The owner is friendly and so accommodating! I mentioned to him that I loved a certain type of tea and within the month they started selling it! As for the market side, they have all of the must have items: milk, cheese, chips, beer, etc.. but my favorite part is the deli where, John John, makes the BEST sandwiches, salads, wraps, and desserts. They will whip up anything you want! The meat is far better than any other deli in Memphis. Not to mention John John is the man. As if it couldn’t get any better than that.. they deliver! They will deliver anything from the entire store to any downtown location. If you haven’t been there then you’re missing out.
