SXSW Recovery, Brought to You By Memphis Coffee Roasters
I got back to Memphis from Austin on Saturday, and it’s been a bit of an adjustment. While I try process everything I learned and saw and heard at South By Southwest and attempt to catch up on sleep, I’ve been relying heavily on one thing: big steaming mugs of McCarter Coffee.
The McCarter Coffee Company is based just a little bit north of Memphis in Millington, Tenn. The company is family owned and run, largely by Jim McCarter. When he lost his job with the county, he decided to start locally roasting coffee.
All of the coffee that McCarter sells is roasted at the Millington shop. It’s a friendly space with a few tables, shelves full of coffee for sale, and giant burlap bags full of un-roasted beans from all over the world.
For a small company, McCarter Coffee has a large selection of single origin coffees and signature, seasonal blends. All of the varieties of McCarter Coffee that I’ve had have been really good. It’s never over-roasted, so it doesn’t taste burnt.
During the spring and summer, Jim McCarter and his wife head to farmers’ markets in Memphis to sell their coffee. They can usually be found at the Memphis Farmer’s Market downtown on Saturdays and the Botanic Gardens Farmers Market on Wednesday afternoons.
You can also find their coffee at Maggie’s Pharm, or in a lot of Memphis restaurants and cafes (like Otherlands). If you’re not in Memphis, you can order their coffee online.

Hello:
Well my wife will love to try their coffee if it is not too strong-I do not drink coffee but enjoy when my wife is happy. I was stationed in Millington some 20 plus years ago and find my self heading back down to TN again. I wonder how the area has changed? My target area is Memphis and have been looking at apartments east and north of the city until we sell our home up north; are there any area’s we should avoid? We would like to be close enough to enjoy the city and far enough away for some peace and quite. Any input from folks would be great…Thanks Jim
