Memphis Needs More Fiber!

Memphis Needs More Fiber!

Google is looking for a few communities around the U.S. to be the inaugural cities for its newest product, Google Fiber.

Google wants to bring super-fast fiberoptic internet connections to homes and businesses in a few select cities. The service would be about 300 times faster than the internet you currently have.

Local governments are able to nominate their cities, and residents are encourage to log in to Google and vote on behalf of their city. Memphis Mayor A.C. Wharton has already nominated Memphis, but in order to seal the deal, he needs all of our help.

To nominate Memphis, log into Google and fill out the short survey. It only takes a few minutes. You're encouraged to be creative though - submit a link to a photo or video about why Google should bring Fiber to Memphis. Like this one:

If you can't make a video at home, you can go to the main library on Tuesday, March 16 to tape a video about why Memphis needs Fiber.

You've only got until March 26th to nominate Memphis, so do it soon. Once you do, pass it on to everyone you know.

Not to mention all the huge non-profits we have in Memphis that would benefit. St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is headquartered here!

First, thank you for your optimism and support of our city. I would encourage everyone to nominate Memphis at the memphisgoogle.net website. We have a unique location with a unique combination of attributes that can be extended to other communities. We are a pioneering city located near the center of the country, on the Mississippi River, in the heart of the Delta, at the nexus of I believe five Class 1 Railroads, and with the number 1 cargo airport in the world. The logistics (rail, airport, river, and warehousing) can be extended from Memphis to other cities, such as Chicago, LA, Miami, which handle lots of cargo and distribution. The logistical advantages are only going to be improved as two more interstates connect to Memphis (I-22 and I-69), most if not all of the railroads expand and modernize their operations and capacity, and expansion and improvements continue at the airport and FedEx. Hit Memphis first with the fiber, and the ripple effect economically for the nation and the world is huge because of our logistical footprint. The heart of the Delta reflects extreme poverty which surrounds and cripples the region. While initially the effect of Google appears to be mainly in the city limits, the city also has unfortunate poverty as well. Lessons and gains can be extrapolated everywhere, but primarily in metros which have suffered recently and may suffer in the future from natural or economic disaster, hopefully to minimize the depths of economic regression and accelerate recovery. This can apply not just in our country, but around the world -- an important factor for a global company like Google. The pioneering spirit, shown by our corporate and cultural history (birthplace of rock and roll, proximity to Southern literature, birthplace of grocery store, the roadside family motel, next day delivery, and the war on pediatric catastrophic diseases) is important. It both reflects the intellectual spark (Memphians' individual and collective mind-power and imagination) which the network can help keep nourish and serves as the canvas that that power within Memphians can create the next Holiday Inn, Piggly Wiggly, Federal Express, St. Jude, Heartbreak Hotel or Light in August. The innovations continue, on small and broad scales, here in Memphis. The central location, coupled with the previous, reflects the visibility that Google can achieve by successfully implementing such a network here.
