Things to Do in Memphis This Weekend - 2/12 - 2/14

Happy pre-Valentine's day, Memphis! This weekend, here are some suggestions for things you can do with your sweetheart (or, things you can go to and maybe meet someone cool):

1.  Old Forest Jamboree, HiTone Cafe, Sunday, 3 p.m., $10

The Citizens to Preserve Overton Park are having a benefit concert to raise money for Old Forest preservation efforts. The Old Forest at Overton Park is the largest old growth forest in Tennessee. The Lorax Posse and Star and Micey are going to play, there will be Ghost River beer and half price pizza, and kids are welcome (the HiTone is smoke-free).

2. Memphis Roller Derby double header, Funquest, Saturday, Doors at 5 p.m., $10

The Memphis Hustlin' Rollers (our all-star team) are bouting the Arch Rivals from St. Louis at 6 p.m. After that,  Women of Mass Destruction (my team!) will attempt to take down the undefeated Angels of Death. The bout is a Funquest in Collierville, and there will be a halftime performance by the Girls, Inc. Step Team and a bake sale with homemade goodies from your favorite roller girls.

3. I heART Haiti, Caritas Village, Friday, 5 p.m.

There's going to be a benefit for Haiti earthquake relief tonight at Caritas Village. There's going to be a silent auction, art show, and spoken word and live music performances. The event is in partnership with Memphis College of Art. Attendees are encouraged to bring new or gently used baby clothes and unopened containers of baby formula as donations.

4. Southern Lush and Lace Burlesque Show, Nocturnal, Saturday, 8 p.m., $10

Memphis's own classic burlesque troupe the Memphis Belles are performing with Southern Lush and Lace on Saturday night at Nocturnal. Expect an evening of retro fun - think vaudeville-style comedy, beautiful ladies, and great music.

5. Take someone special somewhere special for Valentine's Day

No matter who your sweetheart is, there's something going on for Valentine's day that they'll probably enjoy. Check out the production of the Vagina Monologues at TheatreSouth. Take your kids to the new Chocolate Exhibit at the Pink Palace or the new My Bug World exhibit at the Children's Museum. Meet someone new at the Dru's Place speed dating event, expand your love of locally-made movies at the FuelFilm: Memphis workshop, or treat them to dinner at one of Memphis's great restaurants.

No matter what you do, have a great weekend. If you make it out to the roller derby bout tomorrow, come say hi. I'll be working the bake sale table for the first game and skating in the second (I'm Lady Problems, #404).
