Things to Do in Memphis This Weekend – 1/29 – 1/31

Let it be known that I’m not encouraging you to go out in the wintery mess that’s falling on our fair city today. I’m just saying that if the roads are safe, these are the things going on in Memphis this weekend that will be worth getting off the couch for.

1.  Harlan T. Bobo at the Cove, Friday, 10 p.m., $5

Don’t ask me how Harlan T. Bobo and all of his theatrical accoutrements will fit into the intimate Cove, just get $5 and go. If you can make it, I highly recommend Harlan. He’s never put on a bad show, and his songs are everything I love about Memphis music.

2. Live From Memphis Birthday Party, Live From Memphis space,  Friday, 7 p.m.

Memphis’ favorite purveyors of video, web sites, calendars and awesomeness are turning nine, and they want you there to celebrate with them. There was a story about LFM’s two founders, the amazing Chris Reyes and Sarah Flemming in yesterday’s Commercial Appeal. Show them some love, bake them a cake and wish them a happy birthday.

3. Jersey Boys, Orpheum Theatre, Friday – Sunday, Tickets start at $28

Go see Jersey Boys. Seriously. Go. It’s one of the best theatrical performances I’ve ever been to. Be warned that there’s a fair helping of foul language and some mature themes in the show. If you can’t make it to Jersey Boys this weekend, it’ll be playing until Valentine’s Day.

4. Dance From the Heart: Project Haiti, 4 p.m. Saturday, Fred Astaire Studio on Elmore, donations accepted

All four of Memphis’ belly dance troupes are coming together to put on an amazing show to raise money for earthquake relief in Haiti. The show will also include Maori-style poi dancers, live African and Middle Eastern drumming, hula hoop dancers, competitive ballroom dance demonstrations, modern dance and ballet.

5. smART, Burke’s Books, Saturday, 7 p.m., $5

Burke’s Books is hosting the smART art auction on Saturday night. All of the money raised from the auction will benefit the Southwest Tennessee Community College This art auction benefits the Southwest Tennessee Community College Honors Academy Student Activities Fund. Admission is free for art donors and $5 for the public.

No matter what you choose to do this weekend, be careful out there.
