Trying Poplar Perk’n
I know a lot of you East Memphis caffeine fiends were bummed when the High Point Coffee at the corner of Poplar and Perkins closed. But there’s hope for you yet – a new coffee shop called Poplar Perk’n opened in the old High Point space.
I stopped by Poplar Perk’n yesterday around 11 a.m. There were a few people hanging out in the tiny shop. Two super friendly baristas (Hi, Brian and Boby!) and the owner, Jimmy Widden, were behind the counter.
My vanilla latte was the right mix of sweet vanilla and coffee flavor. They’ve got all kinds of coffee and non-coffee drinks. Next time, I think I’ll try something a bit more straight up.
Poplar Perk’n isn’t the old High Point. It feels less like a corporate chain shop (High Point always had that feel to me) and more like a nice, community shop. Plus, the owner and the baristas totally love Memphis.

They are SOOO friendly, and skim decaf latte was good. Plus, bonus points for the name alone!

Its really too bad the owner fired all the baristas. I think only two trained baristas work there now. All the old Highpoint people are long gone. But it used to be a really nice place…
