When I posted the holiday gift guide a few weeks ago, I started getting requests for a list of Memphis-based charities and non-profits that may need help this holiday season. It’s been a toughI year for many people, and it makes me really happy to see the readers of the blog wanting to reach out an help others.

Here’s the 2009 Memphis Charitable Gift Guide. I’ve tried to choose charities and non-profits that are based in Memphis or work directly with communities in Memphis.

The Memphis Inter-Faith Association provides support to families in crisis, helps senior citizens maintain their independence and gives urban teenagers tools for success. Of every dollar donated to MIFA, 86 percent goes directly towards programs that better the lives of people in Memphis. Learn more about donating your money or volunteer your time to MIFA.

  • Thanks for this great post Kerry. An important part of the holiday season for sure. I first saw your note this morning and wanted to respond with my favorite organizations but the day got away and I’m happy to see that many others had the same thoughts as me for favorites. I’d like to mention one that I didn’t see on the list – CrimeStoppers of Memphis and Shelby County. This is a great organization that does more than any other to battle crime in our city. Many people think that it is a part of the city/county government or police department – but, in fact it is a completely charitable organization (501C3) that does not receive any funding other than grants and donations. See http://www.crimestopmem.org for all the facts. Thanks Kerry for all you do – I Love Memphis!

    Kerry,
Thank you for compiling this list! Though I am sure you hear it all the time, you are an inspiration to those in Memphis (and elsewhere) to love OUR CITY!
Thank you for all you do!
