Get Your Wing on at Ching’s

Since my beloved Hephzibah closed, I’ve been trying to figure out where I’m going to get my chicken wing fix. Good news –  I think I’ve found a strong contender in Ching’s Wings on Getwell.

The first thing you notice about Ching’s is that they clearly love the University of Memphis Tigers. There are Tiger posters and pictures of present and former Tigers covering every available bit of window space. Inside, the walls are completely covered in photos of students, basketball and football jerseys, and a random violin.

There are also seven flat screen TVs in the restaurant, which is about the size of my living room.

To order, walk up to the counter and tell the nice ladies what you want. The menu is really simple – you can either order party wings (the little drummies and thighs) or whole wings, and there are only a few seasoning choices – regular, hot, honey, and honey hot.

I ordered 10 regular party wings and my lunch buddy Jen had 5 whole honey hot wings.

Everything in my styrofoam box was seasoned with a sweet, spicy, and salty rub. It was really, really good. I ate all 10 of my wings and wanted more – needed more, really. I could have kept going all day.

I also tried one of Jen’s honey hot wings, which was kind of perfect. It was sweet and spicy, and my fingertips were almost dyed orange from the sauce. Good thing Ching’s is prepared for that sort of thing:

I could probably go on and on about my lunch all afternoon (I can still smell the seasoning on my fingers – yum!), but you’re not going to understand until you go eat at Ching’s. Do it. Go. Now. Eat the wings. Leave me a comment to tell me how much you loved them. Maybe we can go eat them together sometime – I definitely want to go back soon.

I write about what’s going on with Memphis music, food, arts, events, sports, people, and culture. Memphians love Elvis and barbeque with a passion that must be seen to be believed, but there is so much more to this place.

As a Memphian attending college in Nashville, the thing I miss more than anything else, more than central barbque, more than molly’s La Casita, more than Huey’s or even Jerry’s, is Ching’s Wings. That place has basically been part of my life. It is by far my favorite wing place that I have ever attended for many reasons. First, the wings are just incredible- consistently big and juicy with fantastic sauces (my favorites are honey hot or extra hot)- and the fries are some of the best around too. Second, though, is the atmosphere. The walls are covered in pictures of adoring clientele (I am proudly displayed several times), Memphis Tigers apparel, and even some high school paraphernalia. Also, the place is just that much better when the owner, Lafayette, is in. One of the greatest guys in the business, who has been known to give a customer a free lunch, “just cause.” If you can’t tell, I love this place. I am on of those guys who tells all of his Vandy friends about the awesomeness that is Memphis, and this is the first place I always mention. Props on the shoutout.

I second the previous, intelligent commenter (who may or may not be my brother). Chings is so great. My friends and I started going there about six years ago as an alternative to another wing place. The people are great. I love what you are doing with the blog. I love this city too, and I hate haters.

OMG. We are from Mississippi…My boyfriend and I ran across this place while driving down the road..purely by accident. Neadless to say, the absolute best wrong turn we ever made. He prides himself as a self proclaimed  hot wing connaisseur. He and I ate that day….had to go back the next day and stopped by the NEXT day on our way back to Mississippi for takeouts!. These are the best wings we have ever eaten. The staff is very friendly and the service was prompt. I had the seasoned wings.

I would love to try your wings, I have heard a lot about them.  Will you have any Special coming out??
