This Weekend in Memphis – 10/23-10/25

You need to know what’s going on in Memphis this weekend. I happen to know of five things that you should check out. This is really a perfect relationship, isn’t it?

Here’s the shortlist:

1. River Arts Fest, Saturday and Sunday, South Main Arts District, Free

River Arts Fest is Memphis’ longest-running juried arts festival. There are works by local artists for sale, bands, food from local restaurants and hands-on art activities for kids. One of my favorite parts of the festival is the Artists in Motion. These are artist chosen to create in front of the public during the festival. In the past, there have been potters, paper makers and painters.

2. Memphis Hustlin’ Rollers vs. Blue Ridge Roller Girls, Saturday, Memphis Fairgrounds, 7 p.m. $10 ($9 with costume!)

Catch the Hustlin’ Rollers in one of their last games for 2009. If you wear a costume, you’ll get a dollar off of admission at the door. Also, during half time, there’s going to be a Thriller dance off, so study up tonight and compete to win tomorrow night. (If you come, be sure to say hi – I’ll be working the door.)

3. Costume Twilight Tour, Saturday, Elmwood Cemetery, 5:30 p.m., $13/adults, $5/kids

During the the annual Costume Twilight Tour, actors in costumes play some of the most notable Elmwood Cemetery residents. Walk through the city’s oldest (and most famous) cemetery and meet some of the politicians, outlaws, musicians, socialites and leaders that made Memphis.

4. Rocktoberfest, Saturday, GPAC, 7:30 p.m., $35

The Germantown Performing Arts Center is veering from its usual format on Saturday night for Rocktoberfest. It’s going to be a fantastic night for Memphis music (and a rare opportunity to see Al Kapone and Harlan T. Bobo at the same show). Ryan Peel and the amazingly cute pop band Two Way Radio are also playing. So, for $35, you’ll get to see four amazing local bands, one DJ, and enjoy an open bar.

5. For Goodness Sake, Friday – Sunday, Theatre South, 8 p.m. / 2:30 p.m. $15

Here’s writer / actress Elaine Blanchard and director David Prete talking about the show:

Did I leave anything off? What are you up to this weekend?

Scout and I are running tech for a play at TheatreWorks – It’s the last weeekend! It’s referred to as a post-modern comedy, called “Boxing Unformed: My Lunch With Randy”. You can find out more info about the play here: http://www.ourownvoice.org/.
