Someone requested a picture of me at favorite local dive Earnestine & Hazel’s for the Memphis scavenger hunt. That’s easy – I’ve got dozens.
I married my very cool husband Matthew at Earnestine & Hazel’s in March of this year. We chose it because it’s a quintessential Memphis venue (it was also insanely affordable, has a fantastic jukebox and we really wanted some Soul Burgers).
We had the ceremony in the courtyard in the back of the building and the party in the bar. There were soul burgers, cheap beer, the NCAA playoffs on the tiny TV and an epic dance party.
The real hit of the evening were the tours of the building. Earnestine & Hazel’s has been a drug store, a bar, and most notably, a brothel. If you go visit, eat a have a beer and Soul Burger downstairs then head upstairs. There are tiny bedrooms, a bathroom with a clawfoot tub, and a stealthy bar in the back corner. On the weekends, the bar is manned by a man named Nate who can tell you all kinds of stories about the place.
