Reason #10 to Love Memphis: Goner Fest
Reason #10 to Love Memphis: Goner Fest
It's only appropriate that I would find the Goner Records sticker for the scavenger hunt just in time for Goner Fest.
For those of you that think Memphis music died with Elvis, Goner Records is here to prove you wrong. Memphis has always had a strong independent music scene and Goner has the best selection of locally made rock'n'roll in town. If you don't know what you're looking for, the guys that work there can usually make a good judgment call on something you'd like.
This weekend is Goner Fest, the store's 6th annual weekend-long music festival. They bring in rock'n'roll from all of the country for four days of shows at venues all over town. There are too many bands playing the festival for me to list here, but I'm most excited about seeing Davila 666, Msr. Jeffery Evans, King Louie One Man Band, the Reatards (Jay Reatard's band) and the River City Tanlines (one of my all-time local favorites).
If you haven't bought tickets yet, you can purchase tickets to individual events (ranging from $5 - $15) or you can pick up a Golden Ticket for $50 that will get you into all of the events all weekend long (it'll also get you a few extra perks, too).
Go there (and when you do, pick up Harlan T. Bobo's "Too Much Love", the Reigning Sound's "Time Bomb High School" and the River City Tanlines' "I'm Your Negative"):
