Found: A Toothpick from Huey’s

Here’s the toothpick from Huey’s that you requested.

It came from my turkey sandwich. I know, I probably should have gotten a burger, as the burgers frequently win “Best Of” polls for local favorites.

For the uninitiated, toothpicks are a big deal at Huey’s. At every Huey’s in Memphis, there are thousands of toothpicks stuck in the ceilings (and some in speakers or walls). They got there by people taking the straws out of their drinks and loading the toothpicks in them pointy side up. Then, they would put the straw to their mouths and blow to try to get the toothpick lodged into the ceiling.

I’ve never seen anyone actually attempt this during a meal, probably out of respect for other diners. It’s damn hard to get a tiny little toothpick to stick in a ceiling tile.

Have you ever managed to get one to stick?

Huey’s has locations all over town, but I ate at the one on the corner of Second and Union.

I write about what’s going on with Memphis music, food, arts, events, sports, people, and culture. Memphians love Elvis and barbeque with a passion that must be seen to be believed, but there is so much more to this place.

I am the undisputed master of toothpick/straw “blowdgun”. I can probably get 8 or 9 out of every ten to stick.

you’ve never seen anyone attempt this during a meal? you must not eat there enough! every time i go, it seems like people are chewing, blowing toothpicks, chewing, blowing toothpicks, etc, etc, etc.

I may not be up there with Ryan, but I would guess 6 or 7 outta 10 picks stick for me.

I get them stuck all the time! I blow all of the time
